I had just graduated from undergrad from a film production program. During my college years working on student films for a few years, I found myself intrigued by the Script Supervisor position. I worked some student films as Script Supervisor after reading a few books and loved the job so much. They don’t teach Script Supervising in college, so I only had what my professor briefly mentioned about the job and the textbooks to learn from. I had a desire to keep learning and keep growing, and I did not really know where to go after graduating as I did not know any Script Supervisors I could talk to. I found Dawn’s course online and it was such a perfect fit. 

When I first started the course, I was working a part time job while working on smaller projects as Script Supervisor, so the work-at-your-own-pace course has been very beneficial to my schedule. I make sure that I am confident with the material in each lesson before moving on. 

Dawn really emphasizes having neat and organized paperwork, and that was one of the first things that directors and producers notice about my work. What I have learned from Dawn’s course sets me apart from other Script Supervisors. My confidence level has grown so much from the time I started working as a Script Supervisor because of my knowledge of negotiations, paperwork organization, and hearing from others in the course.

What you knew before the class and what you know now?

As a production assistant, I was familiar with the crew positions and forms and knew a little about on set procedures, but not as much about camera angles and set ups. I would often see the script supervisor working through lunch and wondered what they were doing. Now I understand.

I’ve now grasped knowledge of not only the details on the forms, but also the purpose of them. More importantly, I’ve gained a newfound respect for how the script supervisor plays a vital role in the filmmaking process.

Your thoughts on the Homework given?

The workbook information is very dense; therefore the homework has to be! There’s a lot to being a script supervisor, and just reading it in a book will not make me the best! I believe you learn as you do.

The homework assignments are the next best thing to actually doing it on the job. I need to really know what I’m doing like the back of my hand without having to glance back at something in the workbook.

I especially appreciate the tests that are more of an essay or bar exam-like format and not multiple choice...forcing me to really absorb the material. I know that time will not be on my side when I’m in the thick of it at work, so I need to engulf myself in this material and make it second nature.

How did you like being online?

I appreciate the flexibility that being online creates. I don’t have to worry about spending gas going to a class in L.A. traffic...and can work in my pjs in my own space at my own pace.

What do you think about the teacher?

Dawn is a knowledgeable, thorough, concise, and caring professional. I find myself wanting to do my best not only for myself, but because my success will be a direct reflection of her as my mentor.

What is your confidence level since so far

Now 6 lessons in, I’m more confident than ever that I’m on my way to being “the best script supervisor for the job.”

How do other industry professionals respond to you since taking the course?

I’ll let you know once this pandemic is over and I’m out there. To be continued…

Initially, I’d considered several options before embarking on taking TAOC online course. After speaking with Dawn, reviewing the course synopsis, and diving into the lessons, I know I made the right choice. This course covers everything, and the online support group provides another layer of value to the decision I made. Thank you Dawn! Thank you!

Dawn’s TAOC -VFX course didn't disappoint in the slightest, it answered my questions, edified me with knowledge, and gave me the skills to progress to the next level. Her organization of VFX, and special effects shots, was taught directly and naturally to propel the student to work on a production of their dreams. There is levels in this profession, and with this course it’s attainable. A experience you should not miss!

I had been working as a Script Supervisor for 8 years and, as I was trained primarily by directors and through books, I always felt my knowledge was lacking.

I have learnt a lot from this course. Three things that stand out are:

1. Script timing and how it can be affected by mood;

2. Well-formatted forms help make information clear and easily accessible;

3. Write camera angles in a consistent, readable style using precise technical language.

The amount of homework can seem daunting, but each step adds to my knowledge base and develops my understanding of script supervising.

As a working script supervisor, having the course online has been very beneficial as I am able to take it at my own pace. I do lessons between jobs and take what I have learnt with me onto each new project.

Dawn is a dedicated and patient teacher. She always ensures I have understood each concept before moving on to the next lesson. Her reviews of the homework are detailed and thorough. No stone is left unturned.

Since starting this course I have been developing more confidence in my skills and knowledge. I have learnt the requirements of my job as well as what is outside my control. I have noticed other industry professionals being impressed by my increasing technical knowledge and workflow.
